Future Expanding Power Of The Committee

Will they (Defined has in both the panel and the committee) demand more power in the future?

If so then will we have a panel and a committee advising the police with expanding power?

Councilmen Levon Manzie, Richardson, and Smalls called for a police oversight committee and was surprised to find that a panel had already been created advising Police Chief Barber!

Will there be a SET DEFINITION of how much power this committee has OR how much oversight COULD be given in the future? REMEMBER if this committee continues we don't know WHO will get into office in the future and will attempt to grow it! What if the future political class uses it for 'not so advisory and relations' purposes? Many citizens have stated that the panel that was formed by Police Chief Barber should be considered the police advisory committee and that the vote should be NO because of this.

If it passes is it safe to assume ANOTHER fight will occur over the power of the committee into advisory and oversight of the City of Mobile police force? Since there seems to be a fight over EVERYTHING in the city.

Will there be more secret panels established in the future without oversight of the City Council?

Diversity

Will there be a appointee from the LBGT community? Will there be a member of the Asian community appointed to this committee? How about the Muslim community? How about the Indian community?

The issue is over "young African American males" getting shot by police. Will there be several young African American men on this committee? Since they're deaths are begin politicized across the country is it fair to say shouldn't there be at least be ONE young African American male to advise the police on relations with his generation?

How many women will be appointed?

NO Faith In Proper Representation Of All Districts Within The City Limits

Will this committee have proper representation reflecting the demographics of every district? Will every district be included or will it only be District One and Two? Many citizens have stated that they fear it will not be fair.

How about West Mobile? How about the newly annexed Tillman's Corner and Theodore areas? Will there be anyone from the "back door" of the city limits that will be appointed? How can we even start to have faith in the city? Much less expect them to appoint someone from this side of the city or be included in future governmental programs?

Other Questions

Can this committee go up for vote in the 2017 election cycle? Will it even be suggested that this should go up for a city wide vote? Can the citizens from ALL communities be given a chance to debate this sponsored by the City? Since it is the "citizens" oversight committee can retired judges, retired law enforcement, and other retired civil servants be allowed on this committee?

Thank You,
Dustin N. French

Notes: Mr.Cochran and Barber have BOTH made VALID points and I stand with both of these fine gentlemen! If they and all of the police officers believes this comitee is a bad idea, I believe it is a bad idea also. Do you agree? If you think so too then sign the petition!! We only have a short amount of time; let's move quickly in letting the city council know!! Let your voice be heard vote on the poll and sign the petition!
