We, the undersigned, by adding our names to this petition do hereby express our strong support for House Bill 236. HB 236 requires that beach quality sands dredged from navigation channels crossing any of Alabama's coastal inlets be deposited on adjacent beaches to prevent erosion. The intent of the bill is to protect Alabama's limited coastline from being adversely affected by erosion attributable to channel dredging projects. By doing so, the economic well-being of Alabama's coastal communities will be maintained and the State's irreplaceable natural resources will be conserved. All expenses related to complying with the provisions of HB 236 would be borne completely by the entity or entities responsible for the conduct of applicable channel dredging projects and not by the taxpayers of Alabama. The Alabama Legislature is encouraged to expeditiously vote to enact HB 236 into law. The successful enactment of this bill into law will allow Alabama to join its neighboring Gulf Coast States, all of which have already passed similar statutes in prior years to protect their Gulf beaches and shorelines from erosion induced by inlet navigation channels and by assuring valuable beach quality sands are retained within the nearshore coastal systems.

The complete text of HB 236 can be viewed at: https://legiscan.com/AL/text/HB236/2016
