Tell the Illinois General Assembly to vote to override Governor Rauner's MAP Grant veto

The Monetary Award Program (MAP) provides grants to Illinois residents who have financial need and attend approved Illinois colleges. The MAP grants are distributed based on need. So students who need the most help with tuition, books, room and board, food, supplies and other basic necessities to attend college are given the grants first. The MAP grant program is a life line for many students who normally would not have the opportunity to attend college.

On Friday, February 19th, Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed a MAP grant funding bill that would have provided $397 million to the Monetary Award Program. This veto was made days after Governor Rauner said he wants more money being put into education in our state. The budget crisis that Governor Rauner has created has also led to many state universities and colleges to drastically cut programs until funding is restored.

Governor Rauner constantly speaks about businesses and families leaving Illinois. Governor Rauner has the ability to stop this if he wants to. Studies have shown that businesses will choose to relocate to an area if there is a educated and qualified work force. Governor Rauner's veto of MAP grant funding shows he is not concerned with our current college students finishing their education. If he truly cared about changing the business climate in Illinois he would make sure that our colleges and universities have all of the funding to help educate our future workforce.

In the near future the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate could take up consideration to override Governor Rauner's veto of the MAP grant funding. It is important that we send a clear message to Governor Rauner that we want MAP grant funding to become law!

If you want to make sure that your voice is heard you can do a couple of things:

1. Sign the petition to tell the Illinois House and Senate to override Governor Rauner's veto. 2. Share the petition with your friends and family. 3. Call Governor Bruce Rauner's office at 217-782-0244. 4. Call your Representative and Senator to demand that they override Governor Rauner's veto. You can find their contact information at http://ilga.gov/default.asp.

Paid for by the Illinois Democratic County Chairmen's Association
