As a group of 7 seventh and eighth graders, we have joined together to attempt to solve the problem of, hundreds of thousands of tons of plastic being thrown away every year. As we dug deeper into this issue, we found that plastic products such as plastic bottles can take at least 15,000 years to break down in the landfill, ranging all the way to never even degrading! More and more plastic products are made every day, we knew we had to do something. All of us did research, and discovered that there is a fungi, in the Amazon Rainforest(thanks to Yale researchers). It has the potential to live solely off of the polyurethane in plastics and can break it down. Pestalotiopsis Microspora can survive in oxygen and oxygen-free environments, such as the bottom of a landfill. This makes it perfect for degrading plastic in any environment. We are taking this initiative to request the government to create prototype industries in King County that can biodegrade plastic using Pestalotiopsis Microspora. Please join us in the fight to reduce plastic!

If you haven't done already, please watch this 1 minute video that we put together to explain the purpose of our petition. http://voice.adobe.com/v/CbKUM8qsDLs #plastivores!
