On the CBS show Sunday Morning, Bob Scheifer stated that we really need to have a national dialog about how we ended up with two such unpopular and mistrusted candidates for president, and how to keep this from happening again. I believe that part of the problem is that too many of us see inflammatory and damning posts on social media and, full of outrage, repost them to warn others, without ever verifying that it's true. We don't take the time to find out whether the "facts" on which we base our opinions are actually facts at all. We treat politics like a spectator sport, or a soap opera: the more drama, the better.

By signing, I pledge that:

* I will make every effort to verify facts before forwarding posts on social media.

* If I choose to enter into a debate, I will do so respectfully. I will back up my opinions with facts as I understand them, and be open to the possibility that I am misinformed.

* I will not allow anyone to go unchallenged if they post something on my social media that is clearly disrespectful or based on innuendo.

Together, we can stand for a return to respectful discussion that is sorely needed in our political discourse.
