Once again, we are upset and numbed to be talking about another young person who has lost their life jumping from the Divis/Westlink Bridge.

We feel compelled to ask for your support in making this Bridge harder, if not impossible, to climb over. A few seconds hindrance and delay may give the poor souls enough time reconsider their action and pull back. What failed for This young 19 year old? What made ending it better than waiting for the professional care and appointment, we have read, that was being offered to him by local agencies. He was less than a few minutes walk from specialised services where he was known. Again, how desperately sad he was not able to get the help, that evening, in the way he needed. Yes, for this is not the first person to see Divis Bridge as their way to a better place. As we read and are told on billboards, newspapers, social media and hear on the radio - leave it to the professional, give ‘them’ money, they will use it to best advantage and to help vulnerable homeless. We ask that more resources are put towards simple projects like this to help prevent loss of life. We realise it would be a quick fix for this problem Bridge but further realise more time, funds and resources are urgently needed to help save lives.

We are looking for your support and help in lobbying Chris Hazzard MLA, Department for Infrastructure. We feel raising the height of the railings ontop of the block work would be sufficient to give thinking time. The Divis railings are the lowest on the Westlink – all others have been raised or were originally high.

Action needs to be taken to prevent tragedies like this happening again.
Thanking you on behalf of The Square Cut Punt Crew.
